Overview
Upper Mustang trekking is popular trekking destination in Nepal .The landscape of Mustang trekking region is a barren moonscape of eroded sandstone pillars and discontinuous moraine terraces, which together present a colorful mosaic made up principally of earthen reds, yellows and brown. Mustang trekking is relatively easy trekking along the permitted route to Lo Manthang, which lies in the very heart of Mustang. The trek to Mustang is through an almost treeless barren landscape. Strong winds generally howl across the area in the afternoon, generally subsiding at night. Being in the rain shadow of the Himalaya, Mustang has much less rain then the rest of Nepal. Mustang is one of the few places in the world that has long-lived a very close-niche life and that region was, until recently, inaccessible to outsiders. This isolation helped the people of Mustang to maintain their lifestyle and heritage that remained almost unchanged for centuries. Hidden behind the majestic Himalayan ranges of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna, Mustang is filled with beautiful trekking zones, Special Trekking area and Permits are required by trekkers when they visit this region with government registered trekking company of Nepal and Only camping /tented treks are allowed into the region . Mustang trekking is one of Nepal’s most mysterious and least known kingdoms.
Upper Mustang Trekking route stays mostly on the valley floor, though it may traverse the ridge during the occasional rainy period, which raises the level of the river. The horses provide uphill assistance, but must be dismounted for descending. Without substantially high passes (nothing over 5.000 meters) this is not too physically demanding as a trek and it has the added advantage of a very long season, due to the lack of monsoon rains or high pass crossings. North of the Annapurna region in the Nepal Himalaya, the ancient and mysterious ' Kingdom of Lo ' (the proper title for Mustang) is geographically and culturally a part of Tibet. Off-limits as a trekking holiday destination until a decade ago, this isolated kingdom of Mustang prospered in the 15th Century, when its strategic location enabled it to dominate the salt trade between Tibet and Nepal. After flight from pokhara to Jomsom on the upper Kali Gandaki River between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri , our trekking holiday to Mustang allows us to explore a weird and wonderful landscape of eroded conglomerate cliffs, colored by natural earth pigments - reds, yellows, browns and blues. Trekking across passes of up to 4100m, we will also be walking through a succession of picturesque white painted Mustang villages and Tibetan monasteries, set against a backdrop of the distant snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas. We have a day to explore our ultimate destination for excursion in Lo Manthang, a fairy-tale walled city and the capital of Mustang which is quite unlike anything else in Nepal. This enlightening trekking adventure to Mustang in Nepal will surely appeal to those looking to explore a very special part of the Himalaya and finally by flight from jomsom to pokhara or continue trek to Ghorepani poon hill and ending Himalayan adventure trip at pokhara.
