Overview
The Everest trek presents an unparalleled opportunity to traverse three high passes not typically included on the standard Everest trail: Renjo La (5,388m/17,513ft), Cho La (5,380m/17,650ft), and Kongma La (5,535m/18,159ft). This route not only offers a unique perspective of the Everest region but also showcases its best features. However, it is essential to note that the high passes trek is more demanding and lengthier compared to the conventional Everest Base Camp Trek.
Throughout the journey, trekkers will navigate through high-altitude alpine forests, providing rare encounters with Himalayan flora and fauna. The renowned hospitality of the Sherpa people, the inhabitants of the region, adds to the trek’s allure.
Moreover, trekkers will be treated to awe-inspiring views of some of the world’s highest peaks, including Mt. Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Makalu, Nuptse, Pumori, and Ama Dablam.
Undoubtedly, embarking on a 21-day continuous trek up the mountain presents significant challenges and requires endurance. However, the inclusion of spare days along the route allows ample time for acclimatization. Additionally, the support provided by experienced guides and Sherpa ensures a more comfortable journey, with their expertise extending to the treatment of minor ailments encountered during the trek.
Importantly, the Everest trek does not demand prior climbing experience, making it accessible to individuals with minimal trekking background.
Greetings and Welcome to the Himalayan country of Nepal! We are delighted to extend our warmest greetings to you as you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport. Our dedicated representative will be waiting to graciously receive you upon your arrival. They will provide you with assistance and ensure your smooth transfer to your designated hotel in the vibrant city of Kathmandu. After allowing you some time to refresh and unwind from your journey, we look forward to meeting you in the evening. During this time, we will provide you with a comprehensive briefing about your upcoming trip, ensuring that you are well-prepared and informed for the adventure ahead. Following the briefing, we cordially invite you to join us for a welcome dinner at one of Kathmandu's finest Nepalese restaurants, where you can savor the flavors of our traditional cuisine. Your accommodation for the night will be arranged at a hotel in Kathmandu, where you can rest and rejuvenate in comfort. We are committed to ensuring that your time in Nepal is nothing short of extraordinary, and we eagerly anticipate embarking on this journey with you.
After breakfast, your assigned trekking guide will be available to inspect your trekking equipment. Once the checklist is completed, if any gear is found to be missing, you will have the option to purchase additional items in Kathmandu. If time permits, you can also visit some UNESCO World Heritage Sites nearby.
In the early morning, we will take a scenic 40-minute flight from Kathmandu to the small airstrip at Lukla. Upon arrival, you will have some time to stroll around while the guide organizes and distributes the baggage to be carried by porters. We will then commence our trek from Lukla, passing through several Sherpa villages and crossing a few suspension bridges before reaching Phakding, a densely populated settlement of Sherpa people, where we will stay overnight. Since this is the first day of the Everest trek, we will hike for only 3 to 4 hours, allowing time to acclimate to the walking. In the evening, you can relax or explore the surroundings by taking a stroll around this charming Sherpa village. Overnight stay in Phakding.
After breakfast, we will continue our trek along the banks of the Dudh Kosi River, crossing it twice via small suspension bridges before reaching the village of Monjo, which serves as the entrance gate to Sagarmatha National Park. As we enter the boundaries of the national park, we begin our descent. A gradual walk leads us to a suspension bridge over the Bhote-Koshi River, where we will arrive at Jorsalle village, the last settlement before Namche Bazaar. Continuing alongside the riverside for some time, we will reach the Hillary suspension bridge. From here, we will ascend for a few hours until we reach the top of the prominent hill where Namche Bazaar is located, our destination for the day. Namche is a thriving trading town and serves as the capital of the Khumbu Region. Overnight stay in Namche.
We do require an acclimatization day at this altitude to adjust to the high elevation before ascending further. Therefore, today marks our first acclimatization day on this trek. You will have the entire day at your leisure to relax or explore the surrounding area. Alternatively, you may opt to visit the Everest View Point hotel to enjoy its breathtaking panoramic views. Another option is to embark on a short hike to Thame village or simply take a leisurely stroll around the market. If it happens to be a Saturday, you can experience the lively and colorful market of Namche, as Saturdays are known for bustling activities such as shopping, exchanging goods, and socializing. Additionally, you may choose to visit the Sherpa Museum, an excellent opportunity to delve into Sherpa culture and the history of mountaineering. Afterward, you can return to the hotel for an overnight stay.
After breakfast in Namche, we embark on our journey towards Tengboche, soaking in the splendid views of Mt. Everest, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Ama Dablam, and the towering Thamserku. The trek follows a mostly smooth trail with occasional ups and downs, offering uninterrupted vistas of the Himalayas throughout the journey. Along the way, keep an eye out for wildlife such as musk deer, Himalayan Thar, and colorful pheasants. Descending gradually to Kayangjuma, we continue our trek until we reach Sansa, a major trail junction leading to Gokyo valley and Everest Base Camp. From here, the path winds through pine forests until we cross a prayer flag-adorned bridge over the Dudh Koshi River, arriving at Phunki Thenga. This small settlement, nestled amidst alpine woods, offers a few teahouses and a small army post where we can enjoy a relaxed lunch. After replenishing our energy, we gear up for a slightly more challenging climb through the pine forests until we reach Tengboche. Renowned for its close-up views of Mt. Ama Dablam, Mt. Nuptse, and Mt. Everest, Tengboche is home to the largest Buddhist Monastery in the Khumbu region. Upon arrival, we visit the monastery around 3 pm to witness its captivating ceremony. We then retire for the night at a lodge in Tengboche. (B,L,D)
With the majestic mountains as our backdrop, the monastery at Tengboche is particularly striking in the morning light. Here, we have the opportunity to capture breathtaking photos of the monastery and the surrounding scenery before embarking on our day's journey. Opting for the upper trail to Pangboche village, we traverse through a landscape adorned with Chortens, Mani walls, and quaint villages. During our lunch break, we not only enjoy delicious food but also savor the awe-inspiring close-up view of Mt. Ama Dablam. In the afternoon, we continue our trek either northward to Pheriche or eastward beneath the towering north face of Mt. Ama Dablam. As we enter the Imja Valley, the terrain becomes more moderate, offering a pleasant walk. Approaching the confluence of the Lobuche River, the valley gradually unfolds before us. Descending to the river, we embark on the final ascent of the day, the steepest climb up to Dingboche. Upon reaching Dingboche, we are greeted by a picturesque landscape adorned with fields enclosed by stone walls, protecting crops such as barley, buckwheat, and potatoes from the elements and grazing animals. Tonight, we will rest and rejuvenate in Dingboche, surrounded by the tranquility of the Himalayan terrain. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner included)
From Dingboche, we follow a slightly different route towards Chhukung. As we descend steadily, we are treated to the captivating vistas of the Chukkung Valley. Upon arrival in Chukkung, we will settle into a guesthouse where we will be served meals, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner, ensuring a comfortable and fulfilling stay.
Today, you will depart from the conventional base camp route as you ascend to higher elevations, traversing through the Khumbu Glacier to reach the third and ultimate pass of the expedition – Kongma La Pass. Towering at an altitude of 4,700 meters, this pass stands as the highest among the three and does not offer any amenities such as shops or tea houses along the way.
Lobuche - Gorak Shep (5,170 m/16,961ft) - Everest Base Camp (5,364m/17,594ft) - Gorak Shep: 8 - 9 hrs The trail from Lobuche to Gorak Shep winds through the lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier, offering stunning views of the surrounding peaks. Passing by the iconic pyramid sign post, we are greeted by the majestic sights of the north ridge of Everest, as well as Mt. Pumori, Mt. Mahalangur, Mt. Lingtern, Mt. Khumbutse, and Mt. Nuptse, among others. A slight ascent brings us to Thangma Riju, where we are treated to a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of snow-capped mountains. Continuing our journey, we ascend steeply through the Changri Glacier, catching our first glimpse of Kala Patthar, a prominent landmark against the backdrop of Mt. Pumori. Upon reaching Gorak Shep, we are surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks, including the majestic Mt. Everest. After a brief lunch and rest, we embark on the trail to Everest Base Camp, passing through the once vast Gorak Shep Lake. Along the way, we encounter the memorials dedicated to Indian army mountaineers. Upon reaching Everest Base Camp, we gain a newfound appreciation for the courage and determination of Everest climbers who navigate the hazardous Khumbu icefall. Colorful mountaineers' tents dot the landscape, contrasting with the stark gray surroundings. Although Everest itself is not visible from base camp, the views of Nuptse, Khumbuste, and Pumori are awe-inspiring. While we have achieved the ultimate goal of our journey, the sunset view from Kala Patthar is highly recommended for its unparalleled beauty. As the setting sun casts its golden rays upon the snow-capped peaks, the scenery becomes truly indescribable. For those trekkers wishing to experience this breathtaking sunset, our guides and Sherpas will coordinate a hike to Kala Patthar this evening. Overnight accommodation will be provided at a local lodge in Gorak Shep. (B,L,D)
Today marks the climax of our journey as we rise early to embark on the ascent to Kala Patthar, seeking the awe-inspiring views and the first light of dawn caressing the peaks, particularly the majestic Mt. Everest. However, we must prepare for an early departure, braving the predawn darkness and the biting cold temperatures ranging from -10 to -14°C. Additionally, chilly winds are common, adding to the challenge. As we ascend towards Kala Patthar, iconic peaks such as Lingtren, Khumbutse, and Changtse emerge to the east, while the grandeur of Everest gradually reveals itself. Along the way, we pause at several remarkable viewpoints to catch our breath and capture breathtaking photographs of the surrounding landscape. After several hours of ascent, we reach the summit of Kala Patthar, marked by cairns and fluttering prayer flags. Here, we are treated to a mesmerizing panorama of the Himalayas, with each mighty massif unfolding before us in all its glory. While we may capture countless pictures with our cameras, it is essential to etch this breathtaking vista into our minds, ensuring it lasts a lifetime. Upon returning to Gorak Shep, we enjoy a hearty breakfast while awaiting the return of fellow participants. Those wishing to visit Everest Base Camp today will partake in an early breakfast, as the hike to base camp is longer (4-5 hrs) than the ascent to Kala Patthar. Afterward, the group gathers for lunch at Lobuche before continuing the journey to Dzongla. (B,L,D)
Today, we must depart from Dzongla early in the morning, around 6 AM, to avoid the strong winds on the pass and the risk of falling stones from the cliffs. The initial part of the journey is relatively easy, but after about 30 minutes, the slope steepens, presenting increasingly challenging terrain. As we approach Chola Pass, icy paths may be encountered, requiring caution. It is advisable to maintain close proximity between group members for safety. Upon reaching Chola Pass, we will take a break to enjoy some packed food before gradually descending the western side of the pass. While navigating this descent without crampons or micro spikes can be somewhat tricky, it is also exhilarating. Once we successfully cross the pass, we will traverse through grassy terrain before descending further to Thagnak. Tonight, we will rest and recharge in Thagnak, reflecting on the day's adventure and preparing for the journey ahead. (B,L,D)
The trek from Thagnak to Gokyo is relatively short, allowing us ample time to explore Gokyo and its surroundings. Depending on our energy levels and weather conditions, we may opt to hike up to Gokyo Ri for panoramic views (weather permitting). Alternatively, we can spend our time socializing with fellow trekkers, indulging in cakes, and enjoying tea in the cozy atmosphere of Gokyo after lunch. It's important to note that while the route is short, the entire path traverses an active glacier, making it more challenging than the typical trekking path. We must remain cautious of potential hazards such as falling stones and slippery terrain, as the glacier is constantly changing. Tonight, we will settle in Gokyo, reflecting on the day's experiences and relishing the unique atmosphere of this mountainous haven. (B,L,D)
We dedicate another day to exploring the stunning landscapes of Gokyo. If weather conditions permit, we ascend Gokyo Ri in the early morning. From the summit of Gokyo Ri, we can see inspiring views of the Himalayan panorama and the serene Gokyo lakes below. Following our ascent, we embark on a hike to the fourth and fifth Gokyo lakes. The fourth lake, situated approximately 3 kilometers north of Gokyo, is distinguished by its towering cliffs and the majestic Himalayan peaks that loom overhead. Continuing our trek, we arrive at the fifth lake, where a short climb up a nearby hill rewards us with remarkable vistas of Cho-Oyu, Gyachung Kang, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Makalu. This vantage point, known as Scoundrel's Viewpoint, offers a sweeping panorama of the surrounding mountains. From the northern shore of the fifth lake, we are afforded views of the Cho Oyu base camp and the Ngazumpa Glacier, the largest glacier in the world. After taking in the breathtaking scenery, we return to Gokyo, where we will spend the night, reflecting on the day's unforgettable experiences. (B,L,D)
The trek from Gokyo Lake to Marlung offers a captivating journey through the pristine landscapes of the Everest region. Starting from the tranquil shores of Gokyo Lake, surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks, the trail winds its way through picturesque valleys, ancient forests, and charming Sherpa villages. As we bid farewell to the breathtaking vistas of Gokyo Lake, we begin our descent towards Marlung, following a well-trodden path that meanders through the rugged terrain. Along the way, we are treated to panoramic views of snow-capped mountains, cascading waterfalls, and lush green meadows, creating a spectacle of natural beauty at every turn. Passing through traditional Sherpa settlements, we have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the local culture and hospitality, interacting with the friendly villagers and learning about their way of life. En route, we may encounter ancient Buddhist monasteries, offering a glimpse into the spiritual heritage of the region. As we continue our trek, the landscape gradually transforms, with dramatic changes in scenery and terrain. From high-altitude alpine meadows to dense rhododendron forests, the trail presents a diverse tapestry of ecosystems, each more enchanting than the last. After a full day of trekking, we finally arrive at Marlung, a serene village nestled amidst the mountains. Here, we can unwind and relax, relishing the tranquility of our surroundings and reflecting on the unforgettable experiences of our journey. Whether enjoying a warm cup of tea in a local teahouse or strolling through the village streets, Marlung offers a peaceful retreat amidst the Himalayan wilderness.
The trekking trail from Marlung to Namche Bazaar is steeped in history, following the ancient route used by Tibetan traders for centuries. Departing from Marlung, we traverse through diverse landscapes, beginning with the crossing of the Bhote Koshi river. As we progress, the trail leads us to Taranga, where the scenery changes once again, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Continuing our descent, we journey through picturesque villages, each with its own unique charm and character. Along the way, we encounter the quaint Thame village, home to the revered Khari Gompa monastery, a sacred site deeply embedded in local culture and tradition. As we descend further, the trail winds its way through lush forests, terraced fields, and cascading waterfalls, providing glimpses into the daily lives of the villagers who call this region home. Eventually, we arrive at the bustling central hub of Namche Bazaar, a vibrant market town nestled amidst the towering peaks of the Himalayas. Here in Namche Bazaar, we find respite for the night, surrounded by the warmth and hospitality of the local Sherpa community. Whether exploring the bustling markets, visiting ancient monasteries, or simply soaking in the breathtaking mountain views, Namche Bazaar offers a memorable conclusion to our trekking adventure.
Our journey from Namche Bazaar concludes with our arrival in Lukla. The trail leads us on a gradual descent, offering a straightforward trekking experience. Along the way, we traverse numerous suspension bridges spanning the swift-flowing Dudh Koshi river, providing exhilarating crossings amidst stunning natural scenery. As the terrain becomes more level, we delight in strolling through expansive plains adorned with vibrant rhododendron and pine forests. Our path meanders past charming Sherpa villages, where we encounter the warm hospitality and rich cultural heritage of the local communities. Finally, we reach Lukla, marking the end of our trekking adventure in the Everest region. Here, we bid farewell to our dedicated team, expressing gratitude for their support throughout our journey. Upon arrival, we indulge in a hot shower and savor a satisfying meal, reminiscing about the unforgettable experiences of our time in the Himalayas. Tonight, we find comfort and repose in Lukla, cherishing the memories of our remarkable expedition.
Today, we embark on our journey back to Manthali after our enriching mountain expedition. We catch an early morning flight to Manthali, ensuring a timely return to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, we proceed with a scenic drive back to the city. Once we reach Kathmandu, we have the opportunity to unwind and rejuvenate at our hotel throughout the day. For those interested in acquiring souvenirs to commemorate our adventure in Nepal, we can explore nearby shops or venture into Thamel, renowned for its array of authentic Nepalese goods. Whether guided by our trekking guides or exploring independently, this short excursion promises to be a delightful experience. Additionally, if there are any other areas in Kathmandu that pique our interest, we have the flexibility to explore them today. As evening descends, we gather for a memorable celebration dinner hosted by Virgin Nepal Trek and Expedition, commemorating our successful completion of the Everest Base Camp trek.
